Stay safe on public Wi-Fi Networks

Almost all food chains, coffee shops in the country today are offering free Wi-Fi to all costumers. You can drop by at any establishment in your area to enjoy your meal  while checking your mails.

The fact that most wireless routers have a firewall to protect you from the internet doesn’t mean you’re protected from other users connected to the same network. Since many wireless hotspots these days are completely unencrypted, people you do not know can easily access to same the network. Even if establishments do have password, truth is, they don’t often change it, or worst they dont change it at all. I guess the reason for this is about business.  This leaves you unprotected against malicious users in the same Wi-Fi area. Below are the basic steps towards safe surfing online that you should know.

Enable Firewall

A firewall will not make your computer 100 % safe. However, a firewall provides the most effective first line of defense. It is recommended to enable your firewall every time you’re connected to the web especially public areas.

To enable Windows Firewall, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click On (recommended).
3. Click OK.

*Note: If you are an administrator you can change the firewall settings.

Turn Off File Sharing

Let me share my experience to you. I’m heading home on board on a Wi-Fi vessel, few hours ago before my trip i was transferring my files from my desktop computer to my laptop through local network. My laptop’s local drive D has been configured to share and my firewall was turned off (i always turn it off everytime im not connected to the internet for programming purposes). On board, It was only a minute that i’m connected to their Wi-Fi and decided to log-off i realized that somebody else is watching over my files because there was a notification that someone is accessing my share drive. If i had stayed long enough maybe some of my important files might be at risk.

To disable simple file sharing yourself, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced Settings section, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
5. Click OK.

Choose a Network Location (Windows)

The first time that you connect to a network, you must choose a network location. This automatically sets the appropriate firewall and security settings for the type of network that you connect to. This is very important, choosing a network location can help ensure that your computer is always set to an appropriate security level.

Choose Public Network for networks in public places (such as coffee shops or airports). This setting is designed to keep your computer from being visible to other computers around you and to help protect your computer from any malicious software from the Internet. Home Network is not appropriate on public networks, which will turn on network discovery. You should also choose this option if you’re connected directly to the Internet without using a router, or if you have a mobile broadband connection.

Palawan Subterranean River

If you fancy a romantic, ‘Aged’ holiday, get some time off and jet to Palawan, which is just about an hour’s flight from Manila. I’ve decided to call it ‘Aged’ as everyone who visits Palawan makes it a point to endure about a 3-hour road trip from Puerto Princesa to the northern coast of the island, Sabang, where the world famous Underground River is located. The park is one of the 28 finalists of the The New Seven Natural Wonders of the World competition (the other one found in Palawan being Tubbataha Reef). Limestones in this are much younger compared to those found in El Nido (just approx. 30 Mya), but the boat trip through the winding river that flows directly into the South China Sea definitely makes one’s visit to Palawan complete. It was a shame the monkey trail was closed during our visit, but I enjoyed the 8.2-kilometer navigable limestone mountain landscape that gave me an eerie feeling I had just travelled through time and intruded on something sacred. But I’ll do it again.

Bagong Pilipinas – Aquino's inaugural song written in one day

Bagong Pilipinag - inaugural

Bagong Pilipinas

Today will be the biggest day for President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino. Let’s hope starting today it will also be the biggest day for the Philippines. Aquino’s inaugural will be held at the Quirino Grandstand, Manila Philippines. Aside from the presence of the international pop star Charice Pempengco who will be singing the Nathional Anthem, an inaugural song that said to be written in one day by Ogie Alcasid and Noel Cabangon the “Bagong Pilipinas” will also be presented.

Hindi Ka Nag-iisa is also composed by Alcasid who had been an endorser of Aquino during the election. I guess a song from the same talented person that brought him luck is a good break. Alcasid and Cabangon will perform Bagong Pilipinas with an all-star cast of fellow artists, which include Gary Valenciano, Regine Velasquez, Jed Madela, Christian Bautista, Nina, Jim Paredes, Mae Paner, the UP Madrigal Singers and La Salle Green Hills’ Kundirana. But what do we have to expect from this song? Nonetheless, it should be a call to the Filipino people for unity and trust of his governance. This song will be written in history along with what Aquino can do for the country. Let’s just hope for the best. Those who hadn’t voted Aquino should not judge him base on his previous achievements instead let’s help the Pro and mark June 30 as the beginning of a New Philippines.

An attempt at rhymes

Nothing can comfort me better than your touch
But I don’t feel you now.
When I cry I manage to smile between sobs when thoughts of you become clear
You seldom come now.
There is serenity in your gaze and I know not but love and peace when I’m with you
Today I only see a falling bridge, an angry sea. No calm, just a raging storm.
I know you won’t be back, know not why. Yesterday won’t be here again.
Not anymore. I often wonder if I ever gazed at you, if I ever felt you before.

Adsense with Infolinks to monetize your website

monetize your website

I also wonder if I can integrate infolinks along with google adsense on my site. And to clear my doubts I googled the web about integration of the latter on my website’s text ads. After reading Infolinks’ privacy policy i didn’t find a rule regarding competitive ads. On the other hand, I also reviewed google’s program policies.

Here is what Google’s support says:

Can I place Google ads on the same page with other ads?

You’re welcome to display Google ads on the same site or page as other third party advertisements provided that the formatting or colors of the third party ads is different enough from that of the Google ads. In other words, (more…)
